What kinds of papers does AMA publish?
AMA publishes integrative reviews of research in management and related areas. Integrative reviews are understood as reviews of the literature that move beyond description of a body of evidence to derive new insights through integration and/or critique. AMA reviews present a clear perspective on the literature that has value-added in terms of theoretical and/or methodological take-aways.
What kinds of papers does AMA not publish? How are AMA papers different from AMR papers?
AMA does not publish opinion papers, empirical papers, or meta-analyses. While AMA asks authors to provide new insights that arise from an integrative review of literature, these insights should not guide the paper or be the focus of the paper, as they are a theory or conceptual paper (that might be published in AMR). The review should be first and foremost in an AMA paper.
What is the journal’s submission and publication schedule?
AMA reviews proposal submissions twice a year (mid-March and mid-September). Proposal deadlines for the next available issue are given on the journal’s homepage. All proposals are reviewed at the same time, shortly after the submission deadline (see below for more about the review process). AMA is published twice a year (January and July).

Questions about Submitting Your Work to AMA
AMA has a two-stage submission process. First, authors submit a proposal describing a potential full-length manuscript that they may write. Second, if a proposal is accepted by the editorial team, authors will be asked to submit a full-length manuscript based on the accepted proposal. Details about each of these stages is given below.
What kinds of proposals are a good fit for AMA?
Proposals that are a good fit for AMA describe an extensive and integrative review of a management literature that identifies some themes, patterns, or insights not evident from a cursory reading of the literature, and that enhance understanding of the topic of the review. These themes, patterns, or insights should also suggest directions for future research that would broaden the impact and reach of the literature. To construct such a proposal, there should be a significant supply of published empirical and theoretical research on the topic. In addition, the proposal should identify any reviews in the same or similar areas published in the last 10–15 years, and clearly articulate how the proposed review would differ from these extant reviews. Finally, a good proposal will articulate a problem that the review will solve and why it is important to solve that problem. Merely pointing out that a review of the literature has not been performed (or not performed for a number of years) is not sufficient justification for a proposal’s acceptance.
What are the page limits for proposal submissions? How do I format my submission correctly?
AMA proposals should be no longer than 5 pages, single-spaced with standard 1-inch margins and in a 12-point font. References, article elements (including tables, figures and graphs) and CVs are not counted in the 5-page threshold and can be included at the end of the proposal. What is the review process at AMA? Are submissions blind reviewed? When will I hear back about my submission?
Proposals are reviewed by two associate editors and one editor-in-chief. The peer review process is not a blind review, and the reviewers (who are AMA associate editors) see the CVs of authors that are submitted with the proposal.
Why do I need to include CVs of all authors with my proposal submission?
CVs are included to ascertain the expertise of the proposal submitters in the area of the review. It is important to note that submitters need not be “senior scholars” with an extensive publication record. Rather, including CVs is a way for reviewers to make an assessment of the expertise of the submission team as a whole in studying the topic area of the review.
Do I need to include a cover letter with my proposal submission? Can I request reviewers and/or an associate editor?
A cover letter is completely optional. You can request reviewers and/or an associate editor, and we will do our best to accommodate you, but we cannot guarantee it.
Can I submit a proposal to AMA that has been reviewed and rejected previously?
AMA does not accept submission of a previously rejected proposal in revised form. The guiding principle here is the literature on which the proposed review is based. In a sense, the literature one reviews is the AMA analogy of data for empirical journal submissions. Just as empirical journals such as AMJ do not accept submission of a paper based on data on which a previously rejected paper was based, AMA does not accept proposals for a review of a literature for which an earlier proposal was rejected from substantially the same author team. When there is overlap in the literature reviewed but not complete overlap, the extent to which a literature reviewed is too similar to qualify for new submission or different enough to qualify for a resubmission is an assessment made by the editors. When you submit a proposal based on the same literature as a previously rejected proposal on the assumption that the literatures reviewed are different enough, AMA expects you to alert the editors to this overlap and the submission history in a cover letter.
What are the reasons for a proposal desk reject?
Proposals are desk rejected if (a) they do not meet the submission formatting guidelines (e.g., they exceed the length limits, they do not include the 6 areas outlined in the “proposal guidelines”), (b) they do not fit with AMA’s mission (e.g., they are primarily theory pieces, opinion or editorial pieces, empirical papers, or meta-analyses), or (c) they substantially overlap with a previously submitted and rejected proposal, and have not be given a “reject and resubmit” response by an editor-in-chief.
What happens if my proposal is accepted? What is the process for submitting a full manuscript?
If your proposal is accepted, you will be assigned an associate editor, with whom you will work on your full manuscript. You will typically have 4–6 months from the time of proposal acceptance until your first full manuscript draft is due. This manuscript will be reviewed by your associate editor and one editor-in-chief, but will not go out for blind review by any other reviewers. Multiple revisions of full manuscripts are common before acceptance. It is also important to note that acceptance of a proposal does not guarantee that a full manuscript will be ultimately accepted for publication. While rare, full manuscripts are rejected if they do not fulfill the promise of the proposal or are deemed inappropriate or inadequate in quality for publication.
What are the formatting guidelines for full manuscripts? Is there a page limit for full manuscripts?

Manuscripts should be limited to no more than 25,000 words in total, including all tables, figures, appendices, footnotes, and references.
